Great Lakes Black Powder Horn

This powder horn is made from a white and brown steer horn. It measures 11' from the end of the stopper to the end of the other stopper. The large end of the horn is plugged with a block of oak and has a brass fill plug ( which screws in and out) inserted into the middle of it. The throat of the horn has been scraped down and scalloped for decoration. There are five rings at the end of the throat, two of which have leather attached to them. There is a plug which is shaped like an acorn that stops the powder form coming out of the horn until needed. The sholder strap is made of 1' wide by 1/8' thick leather and has lacing attached to both ends so it can be attached to the horn. Attached to the strap with a deer antler button and Imitation sinew is a wild boar tusk which serves as a powder measurer. The tusk will measure 80 grains of powder. The large end has a scrimshawed band approximately 3/8" wide with two different size triangles that goes completely around the horn. On one side of the horn is a scrimshawed picture of Native American Indians and Mountain Men in canoes traveling a river. On the other side is a scrimshawed map of the Great Lakes and a compass showing the north.
