Hand carved Moose Antler
On this Moose paddle I was inspired to
carve a bust of Chief Joseph a very famous Native American Chief of the
Nez Perce. He was born in the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon in
1840. He died in northern Washington in 1904. His Native American name
was Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt which means Thunder Rolling Down The
Mountain but he was known as Joseph, or Joseph the Younger, because his
father had taken the Christian name Joseph when he was baptised by
Henry Spalding in 1838.
Below the bust of Chief Joseph is a Native American sitting behind a tree and a cluster of rocks. His bow is drawn back in an attempt to shoot a deer to feed his family with. The deer is an eight point whitetail buck standing with his head turned as if he heard something coming from the direction of the Native American. The deer is standing beside and in front of two trees and the Native American is also beside of a tree. All of the tree branches rise up so that they meet the bust of Chief Joseph.
On
the end of the antler, where it originally attached to the Moose’s
head, is a carving of a Bald Eagles head. This is my third Moose Antler
carving and all three has had the Eagles head carved in the same place.
This was done because the paddle of the antler looks like an eagles
wing in flight.
Some Native Americans believed that the Eagle was a messenger which
carried messages to the Creator (God) and also brought messages back
from the Creator to the people.
