Sky Woman Black Powder Horn

This Black Powder Horn is made from a large steer horn. The scene scrimshawed on one side is that of Sky Woman a Native American story. They believe that Sky Woman came down from the heavens down to Turtle Island (North America) which was formed by a muskrat gathering some earth from the bottom of the waters and placing it on the back of a turtle. She was met by white water birds on her way down and they carried her to Turtle Island. As the turtle grew in size so did the land on top of him. In some places the land began to crack, and each one of these cracks became a tributary such as a river or stream. The other side has a scrimshaw scene depicting a Native American Iroquois Indian telling this story to a young girl of the village. On the small or throat end of the powder horn is a belt design which weaves in and out of the horn to connect the leather carrying strap to it, the other end of the leather strap is connected to a brass plug. Both end have an oak stopper in it.
